Does Golf Cart Insurance Cover Accidents on Public Roads?
FIn many communities, golf carts are a popular mode of local transportation. However, as more neighbors take their carts off the grass and onto the pavement, many may wonder if their insurance will follow them on public roads.
Understanding Coverage Limitations
In many cases, policies may be written for private property use, which means coverage may not apply on public roads. If an incident occurs, you may be responsible for paying resulting expenses and losses out of pocket, which could be substantial.
Standard homeowners insurance policies sometimes may extend limited coverage to golf carts, but that coverage also typically excludes incidents on public roads.
What Does a Policy Cover
A policy designed for street-use golf carts may include coverage for the following:
- Third-party bodily injuries and property damage on public roads
- Damage caused by collisions, regardless of who bears responsibility
- Damage caused by fires, natural disasters, theft or vandalism
- Medical expenses for you and your passengers after an accident, regardless of fault
- Your losses if you’re hit by an at-fault motorist with insufficient liability coverage
Navigating New Jersey Golf Cart Laws
Regardless of insurance coverage, you must first make sure that your vehicle is legally allowed to operate on public roads. Standard golf carts are typically not allowed to do so in New Jersey, unless they qualify as low-speed vehicles (LSVs). To be considered an LSV, your golf cart must be equipped with certain safety features, including headlights, turn signals, seatbelts and mirrors, and have a top speed of 20 to 25 mph.
Golf carts that qualify as LSVs must be titled, registered and insured if they are driven on public roads. Operating an uninsured vehicle on public streets can lead to significant legal and financial consequences. Additionally, if an accident occurs while you’re driving a noncompliant vehicle or otherwise breaking the law, your claim will likely be denied.
We work with our clients to review state laws and local ordinances and verify that your coverage meets applicable requirements.
